What kind of town you are moving to
Dewsbury sits in Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, between the bigger centres of Leeds, Huddersfield and Wakefield. It is a town with a market, Dewsbury Minster, a railway station on Wellington Road and a bus station on Aldams Road that is being rebuilt. It is not a city campus and it is not a rural village. People move here for work in the wider region, for family, and for houses that are a short ride from those larger places.
If you want a street-by-street comparison, read where to live in Dewsbury. This piece is the arrival list: transport, council, health and the van.
Trains, buses and the first week
Northern runs trains from Dewsbury station toward Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester. That is the commute many newcomers actually use. Ravensthorpe station, just west of town, is closed until 2028 for rebuilding, so do not plan around that platform. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is rebuilding Dewsbury bus station. Buses still run from temporary stands outside. Check before you assume a particular bay.
Mirfield, a few miles west, has its own station. Batley, a few miles the other way, has one too. Ossett does not. If your job is in Leeds, the Dewsbury station end of town is worth weighing against a quieter house further out.
Council, bins and a GP
Dewsbury addresses are Kirklees. Set up council tax, and check bin days, on the council website after you have keys. The household waste centre at Weaving Lane, off Thornhill Road, is the local tip. You need to register a vehicle. Schools go through Kirklees admissions. NHS.uk is where you find a GP for the new postcode. Dewsbury and District Hospital on Halifax Road is the local A&E.
Dewsbury Library Hub is in the Walsh Building on Town Hall Way, which is useful if broadband is late and you need to print a form. Crow Nest Park, on Heckmondwike Road in Dewsbury Moor, is the large park if you want green space in the first weekend.
Neighbourhoods in one paragraph each
The town centre is flats, the market and the stations. Savile Town and Thornhill Lees are the dense streets to the south. Thornhill is further out, more family housing. Earlsheaton, Chickenley and Shaw Cross sit on the eastern side. Westtown and Dewsbury Moor are west, with the park in the Moor. Ravensthorpe is the terrace area by the closed station. None of these is “the best”. They suit different commutes and different houses. Our area pages go into access for the van.
Booking the move itself
A full house is house removals. A flat with a lift is flat removals. Coming from another region is long distance removals. If the keys do not line up, ask about storage. We do not publish a warehouse address, and we do not publish a price list. Call 01924729860 or get a free quote with both ends of the journey.
Insurance is provided with your move. Ask us what is covered when you book. Keep passports, medication and the new keys in a bag that stays with you, not in the back of the van.
